In alignment with Livonia Public Schools Community with Character initiative, Mindful Mondays are incorporated into all of my classes.  These lessons usually take 5-8 minutes (a little more the first few lessons).

There are two reasons, beyond the district initiative, that I began teaching mindfulness in my classes during the 2016-2017 school year.  First, I saw the impact the mindfulness strategies had on my own son when he learned mindfulness strategies in his second grade class.  He learned to use those strategies when he was distracted in class to return to what he was supposed to be working on; and he used the strategies when he had to tackle a topic he was apprehensive about (reading!).  Second, during my 20+ years as a teacher, I have seen what I think is a dramatic increase in diagnosed and self-reported anxiety in students.  I think that giving students tools to help them reduce anxiety and stress is a gift they will be able to use for many years.  Many students have told me that they do use the strategies outside of class and that they help!

I realize not every student is interested or ready for these strategies - but most ask for a few minutes of mindfulness every single day!  To honor the students who do not want to participate, I simply allow them to sit quietly for the few minutes of the activity/strategy.  An article below discusses that even doing nothing for a few minutes has a positive impact on well being!
